maa_durgaGoddess Maa Durga is the mother of the universe and believed to be the power behind the work of creation, preservation, and destruction of the world. Since time immemorial she has been worshipped as the supreme power of the Supreme Being and has been mentioned in many scriptures - Yajur Veda, Vajasaneyi Samhita and Taittareya Brahman. Goddess Maa (Mother) Durga symbolizes the power of the Supreme Being that maintains moral order and righteousness in the universe. Worship of the goddess Shakti is very popular among the Hindus. Durga stands for the unified symbol of all divine forces (Shaktis). Goddess Durga is the divine mother, who protects people from evil forces of selfishness, jealousy, hatred, anger and ego. Mother's love and her kindness towards her child, is the best example of pure love in this whole universe.

The Many Forms of Durga

There are many incarnations of Durga: Kali, Bhagvati, Bhavani, Ambika, Lalita, Gauri, Kandalini, Java, Rajeswari, et al. Durga incarnated as the united power of all divine beings, who offered her the required physical attributes and weapons to kill the demon "Mahishasur". Her nine appellations are Skondamata, Kusumanda, Shailaputri, Kaalratri, Brahmacharini, Maha Gauri, Katyayani, Chandraghanta and Siddhidatri.

Goddess Durga represents the power of the Supreme Being that preserves moral order and righteousness in the creation. The Sanskrit word Durga means a fort or a place that is protected and thus difficult to reach.

Durga, also called Divine Mother, protects mankind from evil and misery by destroying evil forces such as selfishness, jealousy, prejudice, hatred, anger, and ego. The worship of Goddess Durga is very popular among Hindus. She is also called by many other names, such as Parvati, Ambika, and Kali In the form of Parvati, She is known as the divine spouse of Lord Shiva and is the mother of Her two sons, Ganesha and Karttikeya, and daughter Jyoti. There are many temples dedicated to Durga's worship in India.

Orange colour is used and the color of the Saree to wear is Orange. The Goddess of second day during Saran Navratri is dressed in Orange coloured saree.

Third Day, September 21, Monday. – Sthana Vriddhi Gauri Vrata – Ashwin Masa Shudda Tritiya (Aswayuja Shukla Thadiya) –
White colour is used and the color of the Saree to wear is Yellow. The Goddess of third day during Saran Navratri is dressed in white coloured saree.

Fourth Day, September 22, Tuesday – Bhouma Chaturthi – Ashwin Masa Shudda Chaturthi (Ashwayuja Shukla Chavithi) –
Red colour is used and the color of the Saree to wear is Red. The Goddess of fourth day during Saran Navratri is dressed in Red coloured saree.

Fifth Day, Septemeber 23, Wednesday – Upang Lalitha Gauri Vrata (Sri Lalitha Panchami or Maha Panchami) – Ashwin Shudda Panchami –
Blue colour is used and the color of the Saree to wear is Blue. The Goddess of fifth day during Saran Navratri is dressed in Blue coloured saree.

Sixth Day, September 24, Thursday – Maha Sashti – Ashwin Shudda Sashti – Ashwin Shudda Sashti –
Yellow colour is used and the color of the Saree to wear is Yellow. The Goddess of sixth day during Saran Navratri is dressed in Yellow coloured saree.

Seventh Day, September 25, Friday – Maha Saptami – Ashwin Shudda Saptami – Triratra Vrata Aarambha Utsava Puja (Trirathrotsavam) –
Peacock Green is used and the color of the Saree to wear is Peacock Green. The Goddess of seventh day during Saran Navratri is dressed in Peacock Green coloured saree.

Eighth Day, September 26, Saturday – Durga Ashtami (Maha Astami) – Ashwin Shudda Astami – Sri Maha Durga Puja – Goddess Saraswati Mata Puja –
Parrot Green is used and the color of the Saree to wear is Parrot Green. The Goddess of eighth day during Saran Navratri is dressed in Parrot Green coloured saree.

Ninth Day, September 27, Sunday – Maharnavami Puja (Maha Navami) – Suhasini Puja – Ayudha Puja – Kanya Puja or Kumari Puja – Ashwin Shudda Navami –
Purple is used and the color of the Saree to wear is Purple. The Goddess of ninth day during Saran Navratri is dressed in Purple coloured saree.

Tenth Day, September 28, Monday – Vijaya Dashami (Dussera / Dasara / Dussehra) – Mahishasura Vadha – Ashwin Shudda Dashami –
Red is used and the color of the Saree to wear is Red. The Goddess of tenth day during Saran Navratri is dressed in Red coloured saree.
